About

The Language Policy Research Center at Bar-Ilan University carries out basic and applied research in the study of how societies deal with the demands and benefits of multilingualism.

GOALS:

Israel is a complex, multilingual society, speaking some 40 or more different languages. With the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, Hebrew became the national language some fifty years after its revival as the language of Zionist identity. The majority of the population uses Hebrew, but for only half of them is it their mother tongue. To read more about multilingualism in Israel, click here

The Language Policy Research Center was established at Bar-Ilan University in order to conduct research in all aspects of language policy and in the related fields like sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, language learning, innovative strategies of language teaching, language planning and language assessment that are relevant to the development of language policy.
